Ten rabbit holes to exploređ
RIP Charlie Munger, Proteins, Obesity, Tradeoffs, Opinions, and more.
Charlie Munger
Charlie Munger passed away on 28th November, leaving behind millions of us who have learned about investing, life, relationships, mindset and so much more. His talk on âPsychology of Human Misjudgmentsâ has deeply influenced my thinking, my writing, and also my decision-making frameworks.
There are 3 pieces of content from Charlie that I would highly recommend to anyone keen to understand this remarkable human being, who has been Mr. Warren Buffetâs partner and confidant for 50+ years, and a pillar of wisdom and integrity in the field of Investing.
USC Law Commencement Speech - May 2007 - Youtube Video
Psychology of Human Misjudgments - Blog post
Poor Charlieâs Almanac - Book
I must warn you that these pieces of content are life-changing and hence proceed with caution. I thank my stars that I have gone through these umpteen times already and I am not the same. I wish you the same process of self-discovery through his wisdom.
India
Is India capable of becoming a USD 10 trillion economy? Why does it trade at elevated PE multiples in spite of cheaper valuations in the rest of the world? Will political results have a significant impact on economic growth? How long can this growth sustain - 10 yrs? 20 yrs? or more? These questions and many more are answered by Morgan Stanleyâs Managing Director, Ridham Desai in an interview with Moneycontrolâs N Mahalaxmi.
Proteins
How important are proteins for nutrition and longevity? How many grams do you need per day? What are the best sources of it? And whatâs the difference between animal-based proteins and plant-based ones? This GQ article is a good starting point to explore protein intake.
Obesity
What exactly is abdominal obesity? Can you get a beer belly without drinking? Are men prone to beer bellies? Answers to these questions are provided in the link along with a brief introduction to important topics like fat, gut-brain axis, depression, anxiety, and how can these be treated.
Tradeoffs
Young Money is a brilliant writer and his recent post puts a spotlight on a few disturbing questions that our generation is experiencing e.g. Why do people feel unhappy in spite of living standards being 100X better than people just 50 years ago? Why do so many feel unsuccessful in spite of having solid accomplishments to cherish and celebrate? Why people are in a hurry to move on and try new relationships, instead of building upon the ones they already have? Why attendance in places of worship is falling through the cliff? These are very fundamental questions and the answers make for a must-read, especially if you are pursuing your ambitions and seeking happiness.
Opinions
David Pinsofâs post on âOpinions are Bullshitâ was a fantastic piece of writing. He elaborates upon simple words like - âopinionsâ vs âbeliefsâ vs âperspectivesâ vs âfactsâ. Itâs important to distinguish these because we all are constantly seeing people fighting with each other over opinions, that have turned into beliefs, but are not facts. As for the facts, they havenât yet turned into beliefs for many, and hence donât hold peopleâs attention. Every thought/idea in your mind goes through these 4 buckets and how you treat them will define how you will act and make choices in life. So read this one carefully.
Comfort Zone
If you are working on a project, pursuing a goal, focusing on a side hustle, or building your dream - in either case, you would experience umpteen distractions that are trying to steer you away from what you intend to achieve. This post from Nat Eliason is a reminder to make a stand and stick to your pursuit, come what may.
Love
One of the best movies that I watched this year was âA Star is Bornâ. This movie was filled with breathtaking performances. At the 2019 Academy Awards, it even got nominated for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Song, and Best Song Mixing. There is a song in this movie that I keep listening to, and of late I have been doing so at least 5 times daily. Enjoy the song âRemember Us This Wayâ from Lady Gaga.
